To stay within position to contest for the top spot in the region, rising to the occasion against the upper half of the region is key for the Lady Greyhounds.
They’re doing just that.
With a 44-38 overtime win on Saturday against Eagles Landing, the Lady Greyhounds have now won five of their last six entering the week. It followed Friday’s rout of Ola, 52-18, and last Tuesday’s 53-46 victory against Union Grove, avenging a loss from earlier this season. With the wins against Eagles Landing and Union Grove, the Lady Hounds came away with victories against two teams in the top four of the region. It gave JCHS a 6-2 region record, shy of first-place Dutchtown, who is 8-1. Jones County hosts Dutchtown on Feb. 5.
“This helps us stay on top. There are five teams in our region fighting for those top two spots. We just beat two of them, that’s always a good thing,” Lady Greyhounds head coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney-Harris said. “To be able to pull it out in overtime (Saturday) was even better.”
The Lady Greyhounds, namely sophomore guard Jada Morgan, took over in overtime, rendering Eagles Landing scoreless. A pair of layups by Morgan gave JCHS a four-point edge, and tenacious rebounding by Morgan to extend one offensive possession to use up clock coupled with the sinking of a pair of free throws put the win away.
Jones County had to fend off a fourth-quarter charge by Eagles Landing to force overtime. After three three-pointers tied the score at 34-34 with 4:12 to play, the Lady Greyhounds went to work.
“They hit some shots and there was nothing we could do about it,” Gwaltney-Harris said. “Everyone’s going to make a run. They won the region three years in a row; they’re fighters.”
Shania Bryant drew a foul and sank a pair of three throws. Then, after Eagles Landing tied it, Morgan’s driving layup put JCHS back up 38-36 before Eagles Landing tied it to force overtime.
Morgan’s 18 points led the Lady Greyhounds. Shania Bryant had six with five apiece from Camryn James and Shakiya Betha.
